The difference in everyday use
Both keyboards offer tap and swipe typing, autocorrection, and predictions. Auri brings Clean-mode dictation, custom vocabulary, and Ask Auri into a keyboard connected to your saved notes and conversations. Apple’s keyboard is built in, with Dictation and Apple Intelligence Writing Tools on compatible devices.
Choose Auri when you want to turn natural speech into a finished message, ask a question, check a calendar, or draft from a saved note without leaving the keyboard. Apple is a strong everyday option: it led our overall touch test, and its Dictation starts without opening another app.

The first dictation opens Auri to start a session. After that initial handoff, you can start and stop more dictations from the keyboard without leaving the app you are writing in while the session stays active.
Clean mode follows spoken self-corrections, removes filler words, and formats lists. Custom vocabulary helps Auri recognize the names and specialist terms you use.
Prefer on-device dictation? Choose the On-Device English engine to transcribe dictation on your iPhone or iPad. AI cleanup, writing tools, and Ask Auri are separate network features.

Some messages need an answer before they need words. Open Ask Auri in the keyboard to ask a question, search the web, check your calendar, or find a place—all from the app you are writing in.
Keep the conversation going with a follow-up. Attach a saved note or transcript for context, then insert the answer when it is ready. Calendar and reminder changes show a preview for you to confirm.

Apple led the touch total, 92.5 to Auri’s 90.4, with stronger correction and completion. Auri recognized 39 of 40 swipe paths against Apple’s 36, and found the expected next word in all 20 cases against Apple’s 16. For voice, Auri scored 97.1 against Apple Dictation’s 86.0. Tested versions: Apple Keyboard iOS 27.0, build 24A5424a and Auri 4.0. Auri’s touch results used its Siaru engine in a standalone test keyboard (revision 838fe4c); voice used the Auri app in Clean mode.
Limits: One phone, existing learned dictionaries, and one fixed-order series. Voice used 10 clean clips, 94 words, and two speakers. Gboard and SwiftKey language and swipe tests span two iOS builds. Touch and voice use separate scores; speed was not measured. The Auri team conducted the study and develops Auri.

Auri is available for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. Use the keyboard on iPhone and iPad, open Auri on Mac for conversations and saved work, and take your assistant with you on Apple Watch.
For dictation into other Mac apps, Auri Voice is a separate app with local speech engines. On iPhone and iPad, Auri also offers optional on-device English dictation.

Which keyboard scored higher for typing?
Apple led the overall touch score in our study, 92.5/100 against Auri’s 90.4. Apple was stronger in correction and completion; Auri was stronger in next-word prediction and swipe typing on this test set. Neither score measures Ask Auri or Apple Intelligence Writing Tools.
Does Apple Dictation require switching apps?
No. It starts from the system keyboard. Auri needs one initial handoff to begin a session, then supports repeat dictations in the current app while the session stays active.
Does Apple Keyboard already have AI writing features?
On compatible devices, Apple Intelligence Writing Tools can proofread, rewrite, summarize, and organize text. With the ChatGPT extension enabled, they can also compose text. Availability depends on your device, language, region, and software.
Can both keyboards transcribe dictation on-device?
Yes. Auri offers an optional On-Device English engine on iPhone and iPad. Apple Dictation processes speech on-device in many languages. AI cleanup and assistant features have their own network requirements.
Will Auri replace Apple’s keyboard everywhere?
You can use Auri as your everyday keyboard and switch with the globe key. iOS still shows the system keyboard in secure fields and phone-pad fields, and apps can choose not to allow third-party keyboards.
Is this also a comparison with Siri?
This page compares the iPhone’s onscreen keyboard and Apple Dictation. Siri is a separate assistant with its own comparison page. The benchmark measured typing and dictated text, not Siri’s answers or actions.
