When Chat is the right surface

The keyboard is for finishing text where you already are. Chat is for work that needs a conversation, a structure, or a screen you can navigate.

• Turn a vague idea into a plan with steps you can check off.
• Compare options with stats you can scan instead of re-reading a paragraph.
• Review a draft with a persona built for editing, then paste the result into Mail.
• Ask questions about an attached PDF without leaving the app.

If the next action is “send this sentence,” stay in the keyboard. If the next action is “figure this out,” open Chat.

Personas and engines

Two settings decide the feel of a reply more than any clever prompt does.

1. Chat type / persona. About 18 options. Use specialist personas when the job is narrow—Content Editor for tightening prose, for example—and a general chat when you are still exploring.
2. Engine. Two engines ship in the app. The Visual engine builds interactive answers: recipes with steps, comparisons, charts, forms, and similar UI. Use it when you would otherwise ask the model to “make a table” or “give me steps.”

Change both before you rewrite the question five times. A weak answer is often the wrong persona or the wrong engine, not a bad prompt.

Memory, voice, and documents

Three extras make Chat useful day to day without turning it into a second Notes app.

• Memory. Cross-chat memory can recall preferences and facts you shared earlier. Disable it when you want a clean slate or when the topic should not follow you.
• Voice. Speak into Chat the same way you speak into the keyboard when your hands are busy. Clean the ask once, then send.
• Attachments. Drop in a PDF or DOCX, or scan a page, then ask for a summary, a quote, or a checklist. Retrieval is built for that loop.

Chat can also create images or files (PDF, CSV, Markdown, JSON) when you ask. Treat those as drafts you verify before you share them.

A five-minute first run

1. Open Auri → Chat.
2. Pick a persona that matches the job, not the default out of habit.
3. Switch to the Visual engine.
4. Ask for something structured: a weekly plan, a product comparison, or a recipe with steps.
5. Tap through the response, then ask one follow-up that changes a constraint.

If the Visual answer is clearer than a text wall would have been, keep Visual as the default for planning work. Leave the text engine for short Q&A.

Privacy and product boundaries

Chat uses network AI. That is separate from keyboard Full Access, and separate again from Auri Voice on Mac, which can keep recognition and cleanup on-device by default.

• Do not paste secrets into Chat that you would not paste into another cloud assistant.
• Turn memory off when the topic is sensitive or temporary.
• For private Mac drafting, use Auri Voice. For private English transcription on phone when available, switch the transcription engine to On-Device.

Same brand, different pipelines. Pick the surface that matches both the job and the sensitivity of the text.
