Five criteria change the daily experience of a Mac dictation app, and the one most reviews skip is the second half of the privacy question: where the cleanup step runs, not just the transcription.

• Privacy default. What the app does out of the box, for the cleanup step as well as transcription.
• Cleanup quality. Does the text arrive ready to send, or with your ums in it?
• System-wide insert. Does a global shortcut put text at the cursor in any app, or do you copy from a window?
• Offline. Does it work on a plane after a one-time model download?
• Price against your volume. A subscription is worth it at forty dictations a day and silly at four a week.

You give up cleanup, history, custom shortcuts, and the Watch: filler and false starts land in your text as spoken. Good for quick capture, tiring for long drafts.

Superwhisper

Superwhisper runs local and cloud models on macOS, Windows, and iOS, with custom modes that reshape output per context (formal, casual, your own), file transcription, meeting recording, custom vocabulary, and 100+ languages. Free tier: 15 minutes with pro features, then unlimited basic dictation. Pro is about $8.49 a month, with an annual discount.

Pick it if you want control over the stack and you are happy to spend an afternoon building modes that match your workflow.

Wispr Flow

Cloud dictation with strong cleanup on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android: auto-detection across 100+ languages, a personal dictionary, and tone that adapts per app. Transcription and polish run on Wispr's servers, so you need a connection and your text leaves the machine. Free tier: 2,000 words a week. Flow Pro removes the cap for roughly $12 to $15 a month.

Pick it if polish is the priority and cloud processing clears your bar. Skip it if you fly a lot or handle material that cannot leave your Mac.

MacWhisper

A different job. Drop in an audio or video file, run a local Whisper model, get a transcript out, for a one-time price (base and Pro tiers). The recording never leaves your machine. It is not a live dictation tool, and if you run Auri Voice, its Meetings view already records and summarizes calls.

Pick it if your job is a folder of existing recordings: interviews, podcast episodes, lecture files.

Two privacy questions to ask any app

Transcription and cleanup are separate steps, and an app can be local for one and cloud for the other. The cleanup step sees everything the transcript contains: send it to a cloud model to tidy and the client name and salary figure go with it. That makes it two questions:

1. Where does the audio go?
2. Where does the text go after it becomes text?

Price a subscription against edits, not transcription speed:

1. For two days, note roughly how long you spend fixing dictated text.
2. Multiply by twenty working days.
3. Compare that to the monthly price at whatever your hour is worth.
